The following resume is not an exhaustive chronicle of my work experience. It is simply what I currently send out to prospective employers and highlights my primary jobs. You can download a PDF of my resume here.
OBJECTIVES
My primary career objective is to work independently. I am drawn to the field of journalism because of the enormous variety of subject matter there is to write about. Graphic design and internet work hold a similar allure due to the open-ended nature of the work. Ideally, I would like to support myself with an assortment of freelance design, video, writing and consulting work. Ultimately, I want to publish my own magazine and run a useful, community-based web portal.
EDUCATION
I returned to school to finish my degree and, more importantly, to forge new connections in the bustling urban campus. I added a minor in film because I have always loved the cinema and felt digital video would herald a new age of creativity filled with many new opportunities. I have had to take breaks at certain times to earn money for tuition.
1996-1999 -- University of Georgia -- Athens, Ga.
By majoring in publication management, my studies encompassed writing, business, and graphic design courses. I also took computer science classes and independently studied multimedia design in an effort to combine traditional journalism with new media outlets. Frustrated with uninspiring classes, I decided to take leave from the university to travel and play music.
EXPERIENCE
Jan. 2003-Nov. 2005 -- The Digital Aquarium -- Atlanta, Ga.
Working as a student assistant at Georgia State University’s premier multimedia lab provided me with a wealth of knowledge about multimedia software and hardware. I assisted students with software like Final Cut Pro 4, ProTools, Dreamweaver, Photoshop and Cleaner. I also instructed students how to use the Canon XL1 and GL2 cameras available for check out. I was responsible for administering 12 dual G4s and 12 high-end PCs. Additionally, I played an instrumental role in configuring our XServe and XRAID for a LDAP-authenticated fiberchannel network.
Aug. 2004-Jan. 2006 -- Digital Media Group -- Atlanta, Ga
My work at the Digital Media Group was very similar to the Digital Aquarium. Instead of students, I assisted faculty with their multimedia needs. This included digitizing videos for online distribution, creating DVDs relevant to coursework and producing audio CDs of various lectures and events.
Sept. -Dec. 2003 -- Creative Loafing -- Atlanta, Ga.
My experience with the school paper helped me land an editorial internship with Atlanta’s flagship alternative newsweekly. My reposonsibilites included adding puclic events to our database, assiting reporters with research for stories and selecting correspondence for our letters section.
Summer 1997, Dec. 1997 -- Bloomberg News -- Atlanta, Ga.
Reporting with a deadline-intensive financial news network provided an excellent opportunity for me to hone my journalistic skills. Writing stories on moving stocks taught me much about the business world and gave me the chance to interview financial analysts and corporate executives. I contributed to our coverage of the Columbia/HCA Medicare fraud investigation by establishing and maintaining contacts with a variety of state and federal agencies. I was also responsible for scouring southeastern newspapers and the internet for news items of interest to our subscribers.
Summer 1998 -- Flagpole Magazine -- Athens, Ga.
Working as a production intern for Athens’ alternative newsweekly expanded my experience in the publication industry. While I was primarily responsible for pasting ads, my time with the Flagpole staff enhanced my understanding of the printing process and influenced my approach to production techniques.
