In software terms, this site is definitely what you would call alpha. If I were to give it a version number, I'd say it's at something like 0.23. Essentially, I've established a basic portfolio of my work. As I continue to digitize or otherwise prepare past work, I'll add it, along with a few other projects that I'm currently working on. Also, I feature more of my friends and their work as I work towards version 1.0. Expect something new and cool posted everyday. This stage of the site is necessary for me to get work, so I can pay bills, so I can continue to improve the site, so I can get work, so I can pay bills . . . ah, the circle of life in the lowest economic quintile.

Once I establish myself financially with freelance work, I will take this site to the next level. Version 2 of the site will be a community-based portal for media technology. People can sign up for accounts, which will let them upload their own material. The tools for sharing music for remixing will be more mature and e-commerce will be well-integrated. This is where I intended to launch the site but the complexity of the project, coupled with my immediate financial situation, forced me to reconsider. I was a little disappointed at first but upon further reflection, this setback is a blessing in disguise. For one thing, some of the technology I'd like to incorporate is not yet fully developed. Furthermore, to properly pull it off I will need a faster server and other equipment. Fortunately, much of the groundwork has already been laid for this stage of the site. I will continue to refine what work I have completed and will ultimately wind up with a better product than I would have if I launched at this state. Version 2 is where things start to get really cool and should be ready by the end of the year.

But wait there's more! The third step in the evolution of wavetheory.org is the most exciting. It is at this point, which I estimate will take another year to reach, that some of my most far-reaching ideas will take root. Right now, I don't want to say too much about what ideas I have in store. This is partly because I ensure I have the necessary legal protection, but also because I don't want to ruin the surprise. I will say that if I succeed with pulling this off, it will change the face of media marketing more than Apple's iTunes Music Store. A tall order, I know. Just trust me on this and keep checking back.

Cheers,
Jonathan
