I've always liked reading. Most of my experience with the written word has been through turning page after page, learning and imagining. My parents always had cool books around and the trips to the library were frequent and anticipated. I guess that makes me a nerd. That's okay. It's better than being an idiot.
From time to time I like to write. I don't write as often as I'd like because I write slowly. I usually read slowly too, reading aloud inside my head, but it's frustrating to have a torrent of thought trickle through my hands to the page or screen.
When I was six, my grandmother bought the family a set of the Encyclopaedia Brittanica which included a series of children's books on virtues held by notable people. This collection provided a solid base of understanding and, when needed, specific answers to vexing questions. Throughout my life I've been drawn to the printed word, even if it was just printed on a box of cereal or packet of sugar. I'm particularly drawn to non-fiction and science fiction. Perhaps a good way to put it is that I like to read what's true. Even if it's fiction.
My father has worked for the Associated Press since I was in diapers. I never figured I'd be a journalist when I grew up. I wanted to be a pilot, or better still, an astronaut. Upon entering college, however, I came to the conclusion that journalism was clearly the direction I should take. What other field would allow me so much freedom to pursue my interests? There are travel magazines, science journals, National Geographics out there that need pages filled with illuminating prose outlining the world around us!
Alas, the journalistic path is not exactly the road to riches. But I hold steadfast in my view that by exploring my world and sharing it with others, I live by doing what I love. I'll share bits and pieces of previous writing as I find them. I'll have to do a little personal archaeology-digging through forgotten notebooks and scraps of paper, sifting bits from shelved hard drives- but some interesting things should turn up.
Right now, I want to focus my immediate attention on art and technology and how their interaction can lead to real social change. Expect to find interesting tutorials sprinkled with the occasional piece of social commentary as you turn back to this page.
If you would like to give me money in exchange for a coherent package of crafted words I'm all ears. I'm no stranger to writing reports and will even write ad copy if the price is right. Incoherent packages of words are available at discount rates. Proffreading upon request.
